bagatelle game
- Definition
- An indoor table game consisting of a table, two cues and nine balls. The table is generally made of hardwood, oblong in shape, with cushioned sides, covered with green felt and equipped with nine numbered cups or holes, replacing nine wooden pins, used formerly in earlier periods, one placed at its head, eight arranged in a circle and the ninth in its center. Each number signifying the points to be scored by pocketing a ball. The cue is in the shape of a long tapering wooden stick, sometimes ending with a oblong shoe. The balls are usually made of wood or ivory, one is black, four are red, and four are white. A child's version of the game consisted in a small table-top version with designs painted onto the wooden surface, played with marbles and a spring loaded plunger. Used by two or more players to score the maximum points by putting the balls into the cups or target areas.
