- Definition
- A plate, usually made of cast-iron, mounted on the back wall of a fireplace. Sometimes has decorative motifs. Used to reflect heat into the room It is also used to protect the chimney wall from the heat of the fire and to preserve the stone. It may also be used for decoration.
