Definition
An instrument consisting of a pair of rectangular, wooden or metal headboards joined together by an extendable leather bellows; each headboard includes a series of reed blocks operated by either a treble keyboard or a bass buttonboard; the whole is equipped with a pair of leather shoulder straps. Used to produce sounds and chords by expanding and compressing the bellows and by depressing the keys, thereby pushing air over the free reeds and causing them to vibrate.
