- Definition
- An instrument consisting of a wooden sound board enclosed in a horizontal, wing-shaped wooden cabinet with an hinged lid, set on three or more feet with casters; equipped with a horizontally positioned metal frame strung with a series of wire strings, a full-range keyboard, a felt hammer and damper mechanism and a set of foot pedals. Used produce sounds and chords by striking the strings with the hammers, thereby causing them to vibrate.
