Definition

An instrument consisting of a wooden sound board enclosed in a horizontal wooden cabinet with a hinged lid, set on a base; equipped with a horizontally positioned metal frame strung with a series of wire strings, a left-hand inset, partial-range keyboard, a simplified, felt hammer and damper mechanism and a set of foot pedals. Used produce sounds and chords by striking the strings with the hammers, thereby causing them to vibrate.
