- Definition
- A slotted metal hinge plate attached to the movable side of a jointed structure, such as a door. The hinged plate fits over a loop, called a staple, affixed to a door-frame. Used as a fastening device and as part of a locking mechanism, which usually includes a padlock or a hook.
