- A low wall or section of a railing system comprised of a handrail, balusters, and sometimes a lower rail. Used for support when ascending or descending a flight of stairs or as protection at the edge of a balcony, a porch, or the like. It also serves as a decorative enclosure for balconies, terraces, etc.
